Understanding Your Authority
If you’re a teacher teach! If you’re a parent be a parent! If you’re a boss (I mean you really have people working under you) be a boss! Too often people in positions of authority fail to understand the responsibility that comes with being in charge.
There was yet again a teacher arrested for inappropriate behavior with a student. This idiot gave a middle school student a lap dance in front of the class as a birthday gift. The craziest part of the story is that the teacher said she did it because the class asked her. Here’s where the issue starts, the students had no respect for that 42 year old woman as teacher or as a adult. I’m sure she was one of the most liked teachers at the school, but there is a HUGE difference between being liked and being respected.
When someone is an authority figure, the real skill is to elevate your subordinates, not to reduce yourself to their level. So parents be parents, not an older friend, teachers be a teacher, not an older student and bosses be a boss, not a worker. You should never sacrifice your authority to be liked, because if you do you may not be respected.
